The Zambian government's discussions with the Tanzanian government to allow Tanga Cement to fulfill its contract to export 15,000 metric tonnes of a special type of cement to Zambia have reached an advanced stage, APA has learnt here.
The cement was ordered to enable engineers complete a deck at Chembe Bridge in Luapula Province, Works and Supply Minister Kapembwa Simbao said in an interview in Lusaka Monday.
According to Simbao, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was handling the matter and that top-level meetings have been held to resolve the matter at the earliest possible time.
“I can confirm that the discussions have now reached an advanced stage and our counterparts at Foreign Affairs are now handling it,” Simbao said. “You must be aware that the Tanzanian government has suspended exports of cement and that has affected the completion of the deck for Chembe Bridge.”
Simbao said Tanga Cement has failed to fulfill the contract of exporting the product to Zambia because of Tanzania’s decision to suspend cement exports.
Tanzania is facing an acute shortage of cement, leading it to suspend exports of the product.
