Papal mass creates mad rush at Yaounde stadium

APA-Yaoundé (Cameroon) Thousands of believers stormed the sports stadium of the Cameroon capital to attend the mass of visiting Pope Benoit XVI, stirring some panic among the organisers of the religious ceremony.

Over 60,000 people, hailing from Cameroon and neighbouring countries, began to gather at the entrance of the stadium, early in the morning to get comfortable seats before the ceremony kicked off.

The statement released for such purpose urged participants to arrive earlier, so that they could settle themselves before 8.00 am.

Unfortunately, the security forces opened the entrance of the stadium at that very time, creating a mad rush among the queues outside.

Several people scaled into the stadium as they were anxious to enter before the imminent closing of the doors.

Amidst such mayhem, a lady fainted after she fell from the 5-meter wall and was rushed to hospital.

On mid-Thursday, Pope Benoix XVI, who leaves Cameroon on Friday for Angola, is expected to meet the sick at the national centre for disabled rehabilitation in the district of Etoug-Ebé.
