Egypt urges Algeria to protect nationals, interests

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit told his Algerian counterpart Murad Medelci, on Friday during a phone call, his country’s total rejection of attacks against Egyptian fans in Sudan, and Egyptian interests and businesses in Algeria before and following the 2010 World Cup qualification play-off match in Sudan on Wednesday.
The Egyptian foreign minister urged again the Algerian government to protect Egypt’s businesses and provide security to Egyptian workers and community in Algeria, Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said.
However the minister told his Algerian counterpart that Egypt will not tolerate any violations against Algerian interests and nationals in Egypt.
Many angry Egyptian protesters had gathered around the Algerian embassy in Cairo on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Egypt hailed efforts exerted by Sudan to ensure the safe return of the Egyptian fans and the national soccer team after the playoff match.
Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit received on Friday Sudan’s ambassador in Cairo under directives of President Hosni Mubarak to express gratitude for efforts exerted by his country.
On his part, the Sudanese ambassador in Cairo Abdul-Rahman Siral-Khatim expressed the Sudanese people’s satisfaction with the spirit of discipline which characterized the Egyptian fans who were there to support their team.
