The Lagos State Government in south-western Nigeria has stepped up its surveillance programme on swine flu.
The Director of Disease Control in the Ministry of Health, Dr Olufemi Taiwo, said at one-day training for some members of its Epidemic Rapid Response (ERR) team at the Lagos General Hospital that the ERR team was established to monitor activities at the general hospitals and health centres in local government areas.
``We are training our rapid response team to be more informed about the AH1NI virus and to update them on what to do during any outbreak.
``The eight-man team consists of a nurse, pharmacist, medical officer of health, health educator and an information officer to pass the campaign to other health workers in their LGA,’’ she said.
Taiwo said that the government was doing everything to ensure that every member of the society was educated about the symptoms of the virus and what to do during outbreaks.
She said that members of the team were expected to go back to their various local governments and train others.
Taiwo said that the state had recorded two cases of swine flu but no casualty yet.
She said that drugs had been distributed to all public and private hospitals across the state and that the ministry had mounted surveillance at the airport and borders.
