Former Ghanaian leader vows to champion children rights

APA-Nairobi (Kenya) Former Ghanaian President John Kuffour has vowed to champion the rights of children to adequate food supplies in an effort to ensure that the young generation in food insecure nations have a bright future, local media reported on Saturday.

The former President said that there was need to target children specifically when addressing the food crisis in these nations saying that nurturing children ensure continued existence of communities.

Kuffour who is now a World Food Programme (WFP) global Ambassador against hunger was speaking in Kajiado Central district in rift valley province when he visited the area to assess the humanitarian crisis arising from a prolonged drought in the area, state owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation television reported.

Kuffour who was accompanied by another WFP ambassador against hunger and renowned world athlete, Paul Tergat said he would push for the inclusion of all schools in the school feeding programme.

The former president expressed support to a proposal by the District Steering Group to the WFP to give cash vouchers instead of relief food to the targeted beneficiaries, saying that this move would enable the recipients to obtain food stuff locally.
