Moroccan police seize two tons of drugs in northern city
APA-Rabat (Morocco)
Moroccan authorities on Saturad announced the seizure of two tons of drugs from cannabis resin near the northern city of Larache while two drug traffickers were arrested.
The quantity seized, one of the most important in the past two months, was cremated, an official said.
Since the beginning of the year, nearly 190 tons of drugs were seized in the country compared to hardly 110 tons in 2008.
Three major drug trafficking networks have been dismantled, involving dozens of people.
In January, the authorities dismantled a network involving 113 drug traffickers, including 77 security and military staffs.
Rabat was "resolutely determined" to fight against cannabis farming, bringing it down in 2009 to less than 50,000 hectares against 134,000 in 2003 with a view to its eradication by 2018.
Since the beginning of this year, nearly 1,000 hectares of cannabis farms were destroyed.
About 600 Moroccans and many foreigners have been jailed for having indulged in this illegal activity.
